FAQ
Connection fails with “server does not exist”
The free server is a new capability. Older app versions don’t support it and will report “server does not exist”.
Please update to the latest app:
| Platform | Latest version |
|---|---|
| Apple (iOS / macOS) | 2.1.6 |
| Windows | 2.1.8 |
| Android | 2.1.4 |
- The download page always gives you the latest build: https://www.clever-vpn.org/download
- Where to check your version: in the app, go to Settings → Version.
- The update takes about a minute and you don’t need to reconfigure anything — your existing servers and users stay as they are.
No internet after connecting the VPN
When you can’t access the internet after importing the activation link and turning on the VPN, check the following:
- Check whether your server is blocked. The IP of a newly created server may have been blocked previously. Ping your server — if unreachable, it’s usually blocked. Change the server address, or create a new server (then delete the old one) to get a fresh IP.
- If it used to work but now doesn’t, it may be a “noisy neighbor” — other tenants on the cloud host are consuming too many resources. Contact your provider, and prefer reliable providers over ultra-cheap VPS.
- Check if your server is from a Chinese cloud provider. Chinese providers must comply with regulation and may restrict internet access; switch providers in that case.
Windows .msi won’t run on double-click
On some machines, .msi files are mis-associated and double-clicking doesn’t trigger msiexec.exe. Run it from the command line:
msiexec /i clevervpn-x64.msi
“Don’t find kernel-devel of current kernel version …” during local deployment
Clever-VPN-Server needs to compile the VPN protocol kernel module, which requires the Linux kernel module build environment (at /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build). If that directory is missing or empty, upgrade your kernel and reboot, then reinstall.
Kernel upgrade commands
- apt:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install linux-image && sudo reboot - dnf/yum:
sudo dnf refresh && sudo dnf install kernel && sudo reboot - pacman:
sudo pacman -Syu && sudo pacman -S linux && sudo reboot - zypper:
sudo zypper refresh && sudo zypper install kernel-default && sudo reboot
